June 30, 2019: "Dollar Song," by Emmy Bean

I'm stepping in for Stacy today and submitting a song called "Dollar Song." It's a demo I recorded with my friend John Szymanski. This is a song I wrote for a theater piece that was never fully finished — it was a little show with music that I performed in an attic with my friend Jessica Hudson. We told a fairy tale we wrote about two children who escape from an upside-down place and try to learn how to fly. This song may or may not have made it into the final performance, but it has stuck in my mind, and my friend John helped me flesh it out a little in this super demo-y demo (laughing, forgetting words, etc).
I'm thinking about children a lot these days, and about escape and belonging, and what we are doing to children at the border, in our cities, in our churches, and in our schools. I like to imagine these kids from our fairy tale, clinging to each other on a strange journey, discovering new powers, righting wrongs, maybe finding a way out.
Thanks,
Emmy
